Editors, USA TODAY Published 4:33 a.m. ET March 22, 2019 Will Cinderella help March see a little more madness on Friday? The first day of the NCAA tournament is in the books, and potential Cinderellas failed to provide that bubble-bursting upset . Fans will be looking for more of the madness that has branded previous tournaments when the action picks up on Friday . Seeking to avoid another major upset will be the South region’s No. 1 seed Virginia, which lost to a 16 seed last year but could be poised for a big tournament this time . Later Friday, the tournament’s biggest attraction, Zion Williamson , takes the court when Duke , the No. 1 seed in the East, plays North Dakota State. In the meantime, be sure to check how your bracket is faring against the competition. Grey’s Anatomy recap: Things are not what they seem

Of all the unique environments hidden away in Grey Sloan Memorial, I think Maggie’s decision to introduce a Jungle Room and a Blue Room was desperately needed. Based on all the medical jargon and statistics she recited to the eager interns, I can report that a roomful of plants and a roomful of blue light produce higher levels of something positive and lower levels of anxiety. It’s a good thing all the doctors are hot messes and have multiple reasons to visit the rooms so Maggie can take their blood pressure and prove her theory. For example, Teddy is stressed because Tom and Owen are both accompanying her to a birthing class. But before things even have a chance to get awkward, Teddy looks alarmingly concerned when she feels a sharp pain. TO THE BLUE ROOM! Parker finds her breathing heavily, irritated that the azure habitat is not doing its job. He calls Carina, and we quickly learn that Teddy has an insufficient cervix. Well, that’s not good. Carina maneuvers the hospital bed so ...

Seasonal Reese’s are better than Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are obviously incredible, the envy of their chocolaty peers. But as Easter approaches and we begin to consider our springtime candy lineups (I assume everyone does this), it might be time to admit that specialty Reese’s — we’ll use the seasonal Reese’s Egg as an example — are better. There are several key differences between Reese’s Cups and Reese’s Eggs, including size, shape, and the amount of peanut butter within the chocolate shell. Most notably, the cup has ridges and the egg does not. But Reese’s, it turns out, do not need ridges to be the best versions of themselves. In fact, they just need to be shapeless, chunky globs. The peanut butter to chocolate ratio People like Reese’s because they combine two good things that are also good together: peanut butter and chocolate. If a consumer wanted chocolate only, they’d eat a Hershey’s bar or one of those weird truffles in the corner of a Whitman’s sampler. It makes no sense that a Reese’s liker ...

What legacy did Karadzic and the war leave behind for Bosnia?

United Nations judges have sentenced former Bosnian Serb political leader Radovan Karadzic to life in prison, ending one of the most momentous trials over genocide and war crimes committed during the Balkan wars of the 1990s. The Hague-based tribunal ruled his initial 40-year jail term was too light and decided to increase it to life behind bars. But do his victims feel justice has finally been served? When Yugoslavia broke up in the early 1990s, it triggered a three-year conflict that led to the worst atrocities in Europe since World War II. Karadzic was the leader of the Bosnian Serbs at the time. He planned the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, where almost 8,000 Muslim men and boys were killed in a campaign of genocide against Bosnian Muslims. When the 73-year-old lost his appeal on Wednesday, survivors of the massacre celebrated. But many Bosnian Serbs still regard Karadzic as a hero. More than 20 years on, has the region been able to heal its wounds? And what legacy did ...

Netflix’s The Dirt is the biopic Mötley Crüe deserves — ridiculous, dumb fun: EW review

The former bad boys of the Sunset Strip, Mötley Crüe , get just the biopic they deserve in Netflix’s adaptation of the hair-metal band’s best-selling memoir, The Dirt . It’s cartoonish, fast-paced, a bit cheesy, and ridiculously dumb fun. Nikki Sixx, the band’s bassist who would later become a death-wish heroin addict, kicks things off with the sort of cheeky postmodern voiceover that was once groundbreaking but has now become a cliché in movies like this. Talking to the audience, he sets the ’80s scene as a time of stupid haircuts, jazzercise, and “Just say no.” Needless to say, Mötley Crüe didn’t have time for jazzercise and pretty much said yes to every drug that was passed their way. As for stupid haircuts, they were all in. Directed by Jeff Tremaine, whose work with danger-courting numbskulls of the Jackass movies and Bad Grandpa seems to have trained him well for the assignment, lays out the origin story of the band with zippy, superficial economy. Nikki Sixx (Douglas Booth)...

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam – As Ho Chi Minh City’s French colonial architecture recedes into the background and the number of shiny skyscrapers grows in the Southeast Asian megacity there is one man who might be the last vestige of Vietnam’ s colonial past. Duong Van Ngo is the only remaining public writer and still pens letters from the grand 19th century Saigon Central Post Office in this city of 13 million people, built when Vietnam was still a part of French Indochina. Saigon was the capital of South Vietnam before the war but the named changed to Ho Chi Minh City after North Vietnam overtook the city in 1975. Many Vietnamese, especially in the south and foreigners still refer to the city as Saigon. Duong Van Ngo held various jobs at the post office before becoming a letter writer. “I began to work for the post office when I was only 16, in 1946,” the 89-year-old told Al Jazeera. Every morning, he tapes a piece of paper with the words “Public Writer” in French, Vie...

In the ’80s, glam-metal band Mötley Crüe rose to international stardom and became poster boys for the hedonism of the rock star lifestyle. Now, all of their sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll will be put to screen in the Netflix original film The Dirt (based on the band’s autobiography of the same name), helmed by Jackass director Jeff Tremaine. From the trailer, it seems like the film has accurately captured the giant hair, eyeliner, and tight pants of the era. Check out the cast below, side-by-side with the real-life figures they portray. Douglas Booth as Nikki Sixx Chris Walter/WireImage; Netflix English actor Booth, who’s taking on the mantle of bad-boy bassist Nikki Sixx, has a long film resume which includes Noah, Romeo & Juliet (opposite Hailee Steinfeld), Jupiter Ascending , and Mary Shelley. Thanks to that role as Romeo, Booth has practice dying on screen, which will come in handy as Sixx, who famously was declared legally ...

A massive explosion at a pesticide plant in eastern China killed 44 people and injured more than 600, state media said on Friday. The explosion occurred on Thursday at the Chenjiagang Industrial Park in the city of Yancheng, and the resulting fire was finally brought under control at 3am on Friday (19:00 GMT), state television reported. Children at a kindergarten in the vicinity were also injured in the blast. Survivors were taken to 16 hospitals with 640 people being treated for injuries. Thirty-two victims were critically injured, it said. More than 3,500 medical workers were mobilised to assist. Major accidents President Xi Jinping , who is in Italy on a state visit, ordered all-out efforts to care for the injured and to “earnestly maintain social stability”, state television said. The pairing of Oscar winners Lupita Nyong’o and Jordan Peele might seem like a natural choice, but there’s a surprise player who brought these creative minds together for the new horror movie Us — Daniel Kaluuya. Nyong’o, 36, tells EW she was working on Black Panther with Kaluuya when Peele’s Get Out (which Kaluuya also starred in) hit theaters, and she ended up seeing the movie five times in a month. “I just kept going because I was so intrigued and delighted and spooked out by Jordan and his mind and his ability to make a monster out of racism in a horror film that was so sociopolitically astute,” Nyong’o says. “So I developed a real desire and dream to work with him, and unbeknownst to me, he was harboring this desire to work with me.” As fate would have it, Kaluuya, who played W’Kabi in Black Panther and Chris in Get Out , stepped in. “While we’re shooting, Daniel said, ‘Jordan is asking to get in touch with you; can I give him your contact?’ I said, ‘What?! Here’s my co...

Tesla revives its referral program, but it’s a shadow of its former self

Back in February, Tesla cut its customer referral program due to how much it was costing the company. Elon Musk announced on Thursday that the program is back, but the incentives are admittedly much, much slimmer than they used to be. Now, if you refer a customer to buy a Tesla, both people will receive 1,000 miles of free Supercharging. Each referral also receives an entry to win a Founders Series Model Y monthly and Founders Series Roadster, both signed by Musk and Tesla’s chief designer Franz von Holzhausen. The program’s return is great if you’re in the market for a Tesla, but it’s obviously a shadow of the former, quirkier rewards program — which was perhaps a bit too generous. In the old program, one referral got yourself a photo launched into deep space orbit, plus a hat to commemorate the launch. A second referral got you offered the choice between a Elon-signed black Wall Connector or a mini driveable electric Model S for kids. After five referrals...

Budding country singer Justin Carter has reportedly died after a prop gun accidentally went off in his apartment, according to reports. Carter’s death was confirmed on his Instagram page. He was 35. ABC11 in Houston is reporting that a gun that was set to be used as music video prop is what killed Carter. The rising singer recently signed a deal with Triple Threat Management and was considered “the next Garth Brooks,” said the company’s Mark Atherton. Carter’s mother Cindy McClellan told ABC 11 that “music was his world.” Triple Threat is expected to release his music. His Facebook bio describes him as a “Texas born and Texas-raised country boy to his core. His passion and drive stem from being influenced by some of the greats since he was just a child. He grew up listening to Waylon, Hank, George and Jones. Some of his favorites are Clay Walker, Garth Brooks and George Strait. Justin’s passion is derived from the sound of old country, and he cling...

Danny Boyle calls exit from directing Bond 25 a ‘great shame’

Trainspotting director Danny Boyle has described his departure from the next James Bond film as “a great shame.” “What John [Hodge] and I were doing, I thought, was really good,” Boyle told Empire magazine in an interview published Thursday. “It wasn’t finished, but it could have been really good… We were working very, very well, but they didn’t want to go down that route with us. So we decided to part company, and it would be unfair to say what it was because I don’t know what Cary is going to do. I got a very nice message from him and I gave him my best wishes… It is just a great shame.” In May 2018, Eon Productions — the company which oversees the Bond franchise — and Metro Goldwyn Mayer confirmed that Boyle would direct the film from a screenplay by the director’s longtime collaborator John Hodge. Then, on Aug. 21, it was revealed that Boyle had departed the project . “Michael G. Wilson, Barbara Broccoli and Daniel Craig today announced that due to creative differences Dan...

Anatomy of a ‘caliphate’: The rise and fall of ISIL

Samer recalls the gruesome shock of seeing his friend’s headless corpse strung up above Raqqa’s main square. It’s this memory, from a hot summer day in 2015, that defines his time living under ISIL’s rule in Syria . “No one was allowed to touch it, nor bring it down for a proper burial,” Samer says of the body of his friend, an English literature graduate in his mid-20s who was killed for his “activism”. “I can’t describe what I saw, simply because there are no words to describe it,” adds Samer, who uses a pseudonym to protect his identity. “I fainted in the middle of the crowd and was immediately taken away.” Public executions were a regular occurrence in ISIL’s former self-proclaimed capital – a brutal tactic aimed at silencing dissent and striking fear into the population. At its peak in January 2015, ISIL covered an area across Syria and Iraq roughly equivalent to the size of the UK and attracted 40,000 foreign fighters to its cause. By March this year, however, the armed...

Why Facebook waited 3 months to disclose its latest privacy screw-up
- Get link

Facebook is all about making the world more open and connected, except perhaps when it comes to sharing its own colossal privacy screw-ups with its more than 2 billion users. After KrebsOnSecurity first reported that the company had been storing hundreds of millions of users’ passwords in plain text since as far back as 2012, Facebook VP of engineering Pedro Canahuati rushed to publish a blog post noting the error was discovered in January. In other words, three months ago. That Facebook waited until the news was already out in the world to cop to a seriously negligent security and privacy error shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s been paying attention, but the lack of shock shouldn’t translate to resignation. Facebook could have notified users early, but chose not to. Facebook could have notified users early, but chose not to. The question of why Facebook kept quiet until its hand was forced matters. Was it simply a prudent security decision, or rather an...
