How a New Jersey teen walking her dog helped save kidnapped man from trunk of car

A New Jersey teen helped save a kidnapping victim locked in a car trunk, police say, after hearing his cries for help.

Kayla Rose, 17, was walking her dog on Thursday morning when she heard muffled noises coming from the trunk of a parked car.

“I heard knocking and scratching on the trunk of the car, and I just backed up because I was scared,” Rose told local station WABC. “And then I heard it again. And then I said, ‘Hello.’ And he was like, ‘Hello, can anybody help me?'”

Rose said she ran to tell her mother about the sounds and alerted neighbors who called 911.

Officials took the unidentified victim to a hospital for his non-life-threatening injuries, WABC reported.

“He was shaken up; he was beat up,” Rose’s mother, Marie Banks, told WABC. “I guess he was very happy, thankful for my daughter that she found him.”

Police said two masked men carjacked the victim at gunpoint the night before in Hillside, about 3 miles from Irvington, where Rose found him about 12 hours later. The men drove him to local banks and forced him to withdraw cash, police said.

JaVohn Berrouet of Irvington, 24, was arrested Friday, a Union County Prosecutor’s Office news release said. He was charged with carjacking, kidnapping, robbery and weapon offenses after police said they found a handgun and a ski mask at his home.

The investigation is ongoing. Authorities are offering up to a $10,000 reward for tips leading to another arrest and indictment.
